Aside from the specific exceptions explained below (spam protection and Gravatar), we do not share your data with third parties.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string, to help with spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (a “hash”) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have an account there. Gravatar is operated by Automattic — their privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. This is the one third-party data share on this site. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible publicly alongside your comment.
Contact form
When you use our contact form, we collect the name, email address, subject, and message you provide. This information is sent to our inbox and used solely to respond to your enquiry. We do not use it for marketing and do not pass it to any third party.
Submissions are retained indefinitely, in the same way as comments, so we can refer back to past correspondence. You may request that we delete a specific submission at any time (see “Your rights” below).
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you may opt in to having your name, email address, and website saved in a cookie for your convenience on future comments. This is optional and only happens if you tick the relevant box — it is not set automatically. These cookies last one year.
If you visit our login page, a temporary cookie checks whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we also set cookies to save your login state and screen display choices. Login cookies last two days, and screen option cookies last a year. Selecting “Remember Me” extends your login cookie to two weeks. Logging out removes your login cookies.
Embedded content
We do not currently embed third-party media. If an article ever includes embedded content (e.g. a video or image from another site), that content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website directly — it may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional tracking, and monitor your interaction with it, especially if you are logged into that other site.
Who we share data with
- Gravatar (see Comments, above), only for the purpose described.
- If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email, as a standard WordPress security measure.
- Comments may be checked by an automated spam-detection service, which processes the comment content and metadata solely for that purpose.
We do not sell or share your data for advertising or marketing purposes.
How long we keep your data
- Comments and their metadata: retained indefinitely, so follow-up comments from you can be recognised and approved automatically.
- Contact form submissions: retained indefinitely, as above.
- Cookies: as described in the Cookies section.
Your rights
Under GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Rectify inaccurate data
- Erase your data (“right to be forgotten”) — this does not override data we’re legally obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes
- Restrict or object to certain processing
- Data portability — receive your data in a portable format
To exercise any of these rights, contact us via the email on our Contact page. If you believe your data has been mishandled, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the CNIL (Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés), France’s data protection authority — www.cnil.fr.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service. Aside from this and the Gravatar check described above, your data is not transferred outside this site.
